“To understand the need for mental justice, we need to delve into history to understand ‘mental injustice’. Any group oppression begins with mentally oppressing members into feeling weak; this is sustained over decades and eventually normalises discrimination and violence inflicted upon marginalised communities.”
-Deepa Pawar in an interview with TARSHI.
In this interview, Pawar draws from her two-decade experience working with NT-DNT communities, highlighting the intersectionality of mental health, caste, class, and gender. Advocating for "mental justice," she challenges societal norms and emphasises resilience and community knowledge within marginalised groups. She stresses the importance of diverse perspectives in recovery efforts, urging society to learn from community practices, promote anti-caste approaches, and tailor interventions to specific cultural contexts for inclusive safety and rebuilding.
